Yaffa Wainer- "The Nature and Art" by Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion Yaffa Wainer is a talented artist that presented in various places around Israel (Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem) and the world (Romania, Canada, Norway and the Netherlands). Her works are permanently presented in Lauswolt Gallery in the Netherlands. While working as a physical education teacher, Yaffa studied art in the art college of Ramat Hasharon and specialized in silk drawings, batik on wood, soft sculptures and patch work. During these studies her original outlook and conception of techniques and materials was revealed, and is apparent in her early works. Yaffa became acquainted with the secrets of painting while living in the Philippines and with the encouragement of the well known Filipino artist Roger San Miguel. The Filipino technique of drawing on wood with pastel crayons yielded a series of works with special effects that combine the natural appearance of the wood with the painted areas. In addition, Yaffa learnt traditional western techniques, and experimented with creating different paintings from various genres, this made her proficient in oil painting. In her paintings Yaffa uses acrylic and oil paints, but prefers using oil paints as they attribute richer texture quality. The chromatic quality that comes out of her works creates a rich harmony dictated by the different nuances of the country and weather she paints, but improved by the creative freedom she assumes. Painting series allows a flow of proximate situations such as the corn field series where the corn bushes and corncobs are revealed from different distances and add the dimension of time by moving from nearby to faraway. The inspiration for her art works which are painted from different angles and different distances derives from the sceneries and different landscape she observes on her vast journeys around the world. Micro cosmos and macro cosmos are revived on her canvas with the brush strokes that follow her mood, some are expressive and stormy and some are quiet and moderate. The natural scenery revealed in various contrasts is illustrated in the sceneries painted and translated into a vast range of emotions and moods of the artist. Internal sceneries resonate in external sceneries and the contradiction between the tranquility of the fields in Heerenveen to the thick clouds in "sunset in a wheat field" illustrates the extremes of expressionism. The still life and the plants become the main actors of the drama shown on the canvas. They substitute human characters that are absent in the paintings, however, this absence does not reduce anything from the paintings and the expressions. The paintings are based on photos and sketches taken in different parts of the world, this illustrates how nature is nature everywhere. Inspired by Claud Monett who painted the same place in different seasons in order to emphasize the effects of the light on color, Yaffa too returns to the same places in different seasons like in the painting from Yavne, Izerael and Arbel Valleys. Yaffa captures similar themes and documents them while eliminating some elements and integrating various colorful qualities. In the piles of straw series from Devon and Cornwall in England and from Israel and Arbel valleys one can experience the different light in these countries documented by the brush strokes and the chromatic nuances with emphasis on the green shades in England and the yellow shades in Israel. A repetitive element that appears in some of the paintings from Israel is the stones, abundant in the rocky scenery of Israel. The stones are laid on the ground in paintings such as "Olive trees in the Galilee", "Oak tree in the Galilee", the stone wall in "Bushes in the desert" and the black basalt stones in "Sea of Galilee eastern bank". It is important to note that Yaffa comes out of reality but develops it according to her feelings and sometimes imagination, like in the series of the windows through which the observer can see the trees in the different seasons. The inspiration for this series was winter, but then she decided to paint fall and spring according to her imagination. Yaffa has made a significant journey sine her early works painted in 1996 to those painted in recent years. The reserved character of her early works gave way to more expressive works distinguished by a free and virtuosic brush strokes. The chromatic accuracy of the beginning is now substituted by daring color choice that do not necessarily portray the real colors. Enlargement of some objects enriches the intensity of the artistic experience and allows the artist to express herself freely. Especially interesting is the combination of thick color layers next to very thin layers. The quality of the painting is enriched by the combination of light and dark areas, and the combination of complementary colors such as yellow and purple, green and red. Since her childhood Yaffa was attracted to nature and earth. Her visits to Izrael valley with all the emotions and sights of open fields and the piles of straw are treasured with her to this day. Time and again she discovers these sights in different places around the world. Yaffa is more attracted to previous centuries nature, before the development of heavy industries and machinery, she is longing for periods when humans were closer to nature. She intentionally removes from her paintings men made marks (excluding houses) and leaves nature untouched. Nature is her starting point and it is the first ingredient and the first mix from which Yaffa is inspired, then she follows her emotions and decides how to express what she feels. The attraction to nature is related to thoughts about time, eternity and the cyclicality of nature as opposed to the temporary existence of humans. Time and again she discovers the sceneries existing from a long time ago and viewed thousands of years ago by humans who disappeared long time ago and viewed today by humans who are like the "buds of the field". Her paintings illustrate the continuity versus extinction, they perpetuate the cyclicality of seasons. The different sceneries and the immortality of some natural elements like the mountains combine past present and future. In Yaffa Wainer's paintings art and nature, two immortal elements, become a monumental whole full of glory and purity that reflects Yaffa's unique world view and of her capabilities. She follows the school of artists like Matisse and Renoir that found in art a calming place. Matisse said:" What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling ... calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue." Yaffa allows her viewers to find refuge from everyday's troubles and get into an alternative world. Her art works are shown in a solo exhibition in "the Bible House Museum", 16 Rothschild Blv. Tel Aviv. The exhibition will be down on Friday March 6st 2009.Wrote: Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion – artist and curator January 9th 2009. |
